For decades Van has consistently worked to make our community, our classrooms, and courtrooms more just and more equitable.

Justice and Equality. However, these are just fancy words inscribed in granite above courthouse doors. These words can only become a reality when judges understand people, their difficulties, and the programs that can help them rise above those challenges.
HE HAS A UNIQUELY BALANCED PERSPECTIVE.
Having served as a former prosecutor, civil rights, and defense attorney, Van has a uniquely balanced view of the criminal justice system. He also intimately knows the agencies that support - and sometimes hinder - confidence in that system. This balanced view means that everyone who steps into his courtroom will be treated equally and justly.
With three decades of courtroom experience, Van White has litigated countless cases at nearly every jurisdictional level including - Rochester City Court, Monroe County Court, New York State Supreme Court, the New York State Court of Claims, the United States District Court for the Western District of New York, the Appellate Division Fourth Department and the Federal Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City. As a prosecutor and defense attorney his cases have ranged from simple misdemeanor charges to complex felony murder cases. It is because of his extensive and varied courtroom experience, that Van will be prepared, from the moment he is sworn in as a judge, to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Rochester City Court Judge.
Van understands that what judges do in the courthouse is but a small part of what is happening in the broader community justice ecosystem. He knows that it is also necessary for judges to work in collaboration with other community-based organizations. We have many fine examples of such collaboration - including Drug, Veterans and Mental Health Court. Van will support those established initiatives and encourage the development of other collaborative efforts which help people find jobs, get mental health counseling, and locate safe and affordable housing.
Van has led and created some of Rochester's most successful anti-violence and intervention programs like Teen Court, Pathways to Peace, and the Rochester Challenge Against Violence. As a judge, you can expect Van White to be a strong proponent of restorative practices, conflict resolution services, and a restoration of pre-warrant hearings for non-violent City Court matters. These and similar efforts re-direct individuals, charged with minor offenses, away from the courthouse and direct them to programs which can preserve and enhance their lives and futures.
It wasn't Van's professors at Georgetown Law School or his mentors at the United States Attorney' Office in Washington, D.C. that taught Van the most important lessons on how he should practice law or how he should treat people. Rather it was his parents and grandparents who encouraged him to work hard on behalf of others. They taught him that he should treat people with dignity and respect no matter who he worked for or with. If elected to Rochester City Court, everyone who enters his courtroom - victims, defendants, and lawyers - will know that it is a place of respect, justice, and hope.
During his thirty-plus years of community service, Van has learned that the most effective way to make a difference in our community, is to work with others. This campaign to elect Van to Rochester City Court is no different. In this campaign to restore peace to our City; to rebuild lives torn apart by violence and drugs; and to renew our sense of confidence in our justice system, Van will need your help. Join us!
